Humanist Funerals

Humanist funerals are non-religious services and can be a unique way to say goodbye to a loved one and celebrate their life.

Arranging a humanist funeral

If your loved one didn't have any religious beliefs, we can cater for a humanist funeral. You may choose what sort of service you would like to have at the crematorium. Whether it includes music, popular funeral poems, readings or any other kind of tribute, our Funeral Directors will help you arrange exactly what you want.

What is humanism?

Humanism is an approach to life based on reason and our common humanity. Humanists believe that science provides the only reliable source of knowledge about this universe and that there is no after-life and no such thing as reincarnation. These beliefs can be reflected in a humanist funeral service.

What happens at a humanist funeral service?

Humanist funeral services are often individually led and conducted by a humanist celebrant, family member or close friend of the deceased. Humanist funerals do not often include funeral hymns or prayers, though readings from loved ones are still popular.

The funeral service is usually held at a cemetery, woodland burial site, or crematorium if you're arranging a humanist cremation. It typically includes pieces of music, though every humanist funeral is different and personal to mark the life of the person that has died.

The heart of a humanist funeral is the tribute section, which typically lasts up to 15 minutes. It can be written by the celebrant and include a variety of tributes from family members and close friends of the deceased.

Following the tribute, there is a time for reflection which can either be accompanied by music or be observed in silence. The committal – when the curtains are closed or the coffin is lowered – will follow, before the ceremony comes to a close with words of thanks.

What happens after a humanist funeral service?

A humanist funeral may be followed by a reception or wake at the family’s home, or at another location. A memorial ceremony can also be held at a later date to celebrate the life of the person who has passed away.
