Michael “Mick” Smith, much‑loved partner, father and friend, passed away peacefully on 2 December, aged 77. He had faced ongoing kidney problems with quiet strength for several years, and in December 2025 his body could no longer keep up the fight. He died surrounded by the people who loved him most; his partner of more than twenty years, Liz, his son, Neil and his stepson Joe.
Born in 1948 to Arthur and Eileen Smith, Mick grew up in the post‑war years and attended Christchurch Primary School and Morehall Secondary School. In 1965 he began what would become an extraordinary 58‑year career on the railway, starting as a fireman before becoming a driver. He worked at the Ashford passenger depot and later at Dollands Moor freight, where he was among the first drivers to take cargo through the newly built Channel Tunnel. His dedication to the railway was remarkable, and he remained proud of his work until ill health finally brought his long career to a close in 2023.
Mick met Lynn Anne in the early 1970s, and they married in 1976. Their son, Neil, was born in 1981, and the family made their home in Folkestone until Lynn’s passing in 2001. Mick’s love for his family was unwavering, and he carried that devotion with him throughout his life.
Away from the railway, Mick found joy and peace in fishing. He spent countless summers by lakes across the UK and France, and he was never happier than when in a bivvy by the water, and a radio with the Chelsea game on nearby. A memorable trip to the Loire Valley in the 1990s finally brought him the “big one” he had always dreamt of.
It was fishing, too, that changed the course of his life. A chance encounter during a trip to Wales in 2002 led him to Liz, beginning a loving and devoted 23‑year partnership. Within 18 months, Liz had moved to Folkestone with her son Joe, where together they made a home on the East Cliff overlooking the English Channel. In March 2025 they celebrated their commitment to one another with a beautiful civil ceremony, a day filled with joy and love.
Mick will be remembered for his warmth, loyalty and the dignified way he always approached his life, always with a strong sense of justice and wanting to support those needing it. He will be missed by his loved ones, but grateful that they had the honour of sharing their lives with him.
