Vera’s life was essentially a life of love and caring for two families, one in Paddington, and the other in Southport, Surbiton and St Albans.
In Paddington, Vera was one of five children of Phyllis and George Day. She helped bring up her niece, Dawn, until the age of 15 and also her younger brother, John.
She had little schooling, worked in her Father’s shop, where the heavy lifting caused her back problems for the rest of her life. She joined the Civil Service, where, eventually, she met Bill. They both separately relocated to Merseyside with the Health and Safety Executive, where they later married and Vera became a Catholic.
Southport was a great place to start married life and where their son, David, was born, but they later moved to Surbiton, then St Albans. Vera was a Heaven sent blessing to Bill, who has suffered from OCD since childhood, no easy task for Vera, and, of course, she cherished her son, David, her “little baby”, who is now over 6’ tall.
Vera was a blessing, too in her care for her Father, George, Dawn’s Mother, Lil, Bill’s Mother, Hannah, and Bill’s Auntie Kate, who she looked after for around eight years, another tough task.
So Vera’s life really was a wonderful life of love and caring, a God loving life, a family loving life and a people loving life, lots of people. The words that Bill likes to remember most at Vera’s bedside were “please”, “thank you” and “ I love you too”.
