Family flowers only please

Longtime Lancaster resident Wendy Bellany died on 6 May 2024, aged 87, at Laurel Bank Nursing Home in Lancaster. Born in South Wales in 1936, Wendy was the oldest child of Glyndwr and Bronwen Thomas. After training as a teacher, she married Ian Bellany in 1965. She taught at a primary school in London and spent two years in Australia before moving to Lancaster in 1970, when Ian began teaching in the Lancaster University Politics Department. A passionate genealogist, she produced landmark research on the Jewish community of Merthyr Tydfil, for which she received recognition at a royal reception honouring work that fostered interfaith relations. She was predeceased by her husband and by her daughter, Alison Bellany. She is survived by her son, Alastair Bellany; her daughter-in-law, Deborah Yaffe; her brother, Canon Huw Thomas; and two grandchildren, David and Rachel Yaffe-Bellany. Memorial donations may be made to CancerCare.
