John Ellis passed away peacefully in hospital on 6th August 2026, aged 94.

A much-loved father to Keith and Karen and a proud grandfather to Callum, Ashley, Miles, Alex and Ben, John was a kind and caring man who would do anything for others, especially his family.
A gifted mathematician, John graduated with First Class Honours in Mathematics and went on to complete an MSc in Mathematics at University College London (UCL). His professional achievements were recognised through his membership of the British Computer Society (MBCS) and his status as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). He spent 32 years working in computing for the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB), where he applied his mathematical expertise throughout a long and distinguished career. Prior to this he worked as an aerodynamicist for Vickers-Armstrong and later for the Ministry of Supply. After his time at the CEGB, he enjoyed working as a House Steward at Kew Gardens.
Scouting was a lifelong passion, from his own childhood through to serving as Group Scout Leader for Kew Scout Group, Venture Scout Leader for 2nd Mortlake and Assistant District Commissioner for Venture Scouts.
Cricket was another great passion throughout John’s life. A talented left-handed opening batsman, he captained the team at Shene Grammar School and, while studying at UCL, was part of the team that won the University Knockout Cup in 1953. He later played in the Southampton Parks League for Supermarine, regularly taking to the field alongside and against Test cricketers. He went on to enjoy captaining both Masonians Cricket Club and the CEGB cricket team, scoring centuries for both. His love of cricket remained with him throughout his life, alongside his lifelong support for Arsenal.
John will be remembered with great love and affection and will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.
Family flowers only please. Donations in John’s memory to the Down’s Syndrome Association would be gratefully received.
After the ceremony, a celebration of John’s life will be held at 2nd Mortlake Scouts, The Gym, Alder Road, Mortlake.
