Dr Helene Sandra Martin passed away at her home on Saturday 7th March 2026, aged 70 years.
Helene was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1955 and was the cherished daughter of Theodore and Audrey Abayasekera, and sister of Cheryl, Roger, Romaine, Fionee and Gerald. The family came to the UK when Helene was 7 years old. She later went on to study medicine, training in psychiatry.
Helene was the beloved wife of Craig, whom she married in 1981, and precious mother to Daniel, Samuel, Luke and Stephen. She was the esteemed mother-in-law to Anna, Joana, Ashleigh and Lucy and much-adored grandmother to Lois, Esther, Santiago, Joshua, Ethan, Freya, Emilia, Zoe, Jason and Jedidiah.
Helene was a devout Christian whose faith in Jesus permeated every aspect of her life. She delighted to help people and always sought to love and serve those around her; she consistently put others above herself. Helene was kind-hearted, sincere, full of joy and compassion; she was beautiful on the inside and out.
Having suffered from cancer for many years, in the spring of 2026 Helene finally went to be with her Lord, Saviour and Friend. She is much loved and will be deeply missed. Her family and friends take comfort that she has been freed from her suffering, and that she is in the presence of Jesus, in whom there is fullness of joy, delight and life forevermore (Psalm 16:11).
