Brenda—often known as Bunny—passed away peacefully at Lincombe Manor Care Home in Torquay, on the 9th January 2026. She was 96.
Born in 1929, Brenda grew up as the youngest of eight in Wandsworth. She was evacuated during the Second World War, an experience that shaped her courage, resilience, and lifelong get-on-with-it attitude. She left school at fourteen to work in the War Office, a time she later remembered with pride and excitement — and where she met her future husband, Ray.
They moved to Old Basing, Hampshire, to raise their two daughters, Laura (Hannah) and Lesley. Family life was busy, but that never stopped Brenda from giving her time to others. She volunteered for the Samaritans and Riding for the Disabled, always with kindness and compassion.
In 1977, Brenda and Ray moved to Devon, which became her true home. After Ray’s death in 2002, she embraced life there with her characteristic spirit and sense of fun, finding joy in her garden, card games, gin and tonic, and treasured friendships. She volunteered for the National Trust for three decades and was an active member of the W.I. until, at ninety, she finally stopped driving.
Brenda leaves behind four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored. She will be remembered for her ever-ready smile, her generosity, and her warmth and, to those who knew her, she will always remain a legend.
Traditional dress preferred, but feel free to accessorise with something bright. In lieu of flowers, donations are invited to support the work of the RSPCA and may be made via the facility on this notice, or by retiring collection at the service.
