Patricia Johnston, née Rorke, was born in Rangoon (Yangon, Myanmar) in 1923. She lived all her young life in that cosmopolitan city until the Japanese invaded and she was forced to leave university and evacuate to India with her family. There she joined the WAC(I) and worked in a Special Liaison Unit, part of Bletchley and Operation Ultra.
Her memories of her young life, and that of a European family in the East, were captured in her autobiography Every Common Bush. Her war years were written about by Victoria Panton Bacon in her book about Remarkable Journeys of the Second World War.
Patricia was a highly respected, warm woman who was loved by her family and her friends in the village where she died peacefully at home.
