Retired Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, pioneer of laparoscopic surgery.
Born 27th March 1931, Calcutta, India. Died 13th November 2025, Clitheroe, Lancashire.
Eldest child of the Reverend James Herbert Manson and Christina Mary Wilson. Educated at High Trees School, Surrey (1936 - 1939); Manchester Grammar School (1940 - 1949); University of Manchester, graduating MB, ChB (1956).
Flight Lieutenant, Royal Air Force (1958 - 1961); appointed specialist, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, RAF Hospital, Steamer Point, Aden (1959 - 1961). Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Preston, Lancashire (1969 - 1995), where he was deeply respected by patients and colleagues alike.
Founder of The Ospreys Gynaecological Society (1977). Founder member of Fulwood Hall Hospital, Preston (1986). Co-founder and Chairman of the 'Baby Beat Appeal' and founder of the 'Baby Beat' charity. Regional Chairman of the British Medical Association (1992 - 1993). Elected Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (1979). Fellow of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society. Fellow of the Manchester Medical Society.
Beloved husband of Rosalind Mary (née Armitstead). Father of Christopher, Susan, Nicholas and Thomas. Dearly loved and remembered by family, friends and former colleagues.
A Service of Thanksgiving will be held on the 13th February 2026 at St. Mary and All Saints Church, Whalley, Lancashire, BB7 9SY, afterwards at Whalley Abbey. If you wish to attend, please confirm via email: manson.sot@gmail.com.
