Peter passed away peacefully, on 15th March aged 92.
Peter was born in Dunkeld Road, Ilford on 27 November 1932. He was the 8th of 10 children. Part of his childhood was affected by the Second World War, during which he was evacuated three times, usually with the three siblings closest in age to him. Although there are obvious challenges in these experiences Peter, his brothers and his sister found a certain amount of adventure in them too!
A little more than a year after the war Peter left school at the age of 14. He tried a number of jobs in his early working life, most notably working as an assistant groundsman at Ilford Cricket Club which frequently hosted county cricket matches featuring Essex. It wasn’t long however until National Service required him to join the armed forces at the age of 18.
Peter signed up for the RAF in January 1951 and trained as a mechanic. Finding the life to his liking Peter extended his service to 5 years and reached the rank of corporal. He served for a spell in the Canal Zone in Egypt (less to his liking!).
On returning to civilian life Peter embarked on the career that would see him through to retirement at the age of 61 many years later – freight forwarding – becoming Manager of the imports department. During this time he met his future wife, Ivy, and they married in 1961. They moved to Rainham, Essex in 1964 and this would remain his home for over 50 years. They had a son, Martin, in 1972 and the small family remained happily together until the sad passing of Ivy in 1988. Peter was a devoted husband and father.
Peter retired in 1993 and rediscovered his love of dancing, which he indulged on most evenings for a number of years. He met his good friend and companion Barbara through the social life that dancing gave him and they were very close for many years until his death, sharing lots of good times along the way. Peter was also a keen golfer, playing several times a week in retirement, he loved cricket and he was a lifelong West Ham supporter, attending his first match as a youngster during the war years.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
