Margaret grew up in south London with her mother, a primary school headteacher and father, a blind piano tuner. She attended Homerton Teacher Training College, Cambridge where she also met her husband, Norman, who was studying natural sciences at the university. She taught in schools in London, Cornwall, St Albans and Harpenden.
She had three daughters - Celia, Judith and Penny - and towards the end of her working life took an English degree as an external student of London University. She was an active tennis player, walker and swimmer, a keen reader and member of the Methodist church.
