With great sadness, we announce the passing of Barrie Johns, affectionately known as Baz, who left us peacefully at 82. Born in Kingsbridge, Devon, he was the beloved son of Horace and Annie, and brother to his late sister, Squib.
Barrie’s early years in Devon, growing up in pubs run by his father, sparked his lifelong love for machinery—learning to drive tractors at just 11. At 15, he joined the Royal Air Force as an Aircraft Apprentice at RAF Halton, proudly serving as one of Trenchard’s Brats. His career as an armorer took him to East Germany during the Cold War, working on Hawker Hunters, ejection seats, and Firestreak missiles, igniting a lifelong passion for aviation.
After the RAF, Barrie found success in the grocery trade, building several businesses, including Barrie Johns Fresh Foods in Royal Leamington Spa. It was during this time he met Carol, his beloved wife and business partner. Together, they created a thriving family business, with Barrie becoming a respected figure in the community.
Barrie was a devoted husband and father to Matthew and Rachel, always finding time for his family despite working long hours. His greatest joy was flying—earning his pilot’s licence after Carol gifted him flying lessons for his 40th birthday. Some of our fondest memories are of Sundays at the airfield, sharing his love for the skies.
Barrie’s life was filled with adventure, hard work, and unwavering love. His warmth, strength, and stories will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Blue skies and tailwinds, Baz. We love you always.
