It is with sadness that we announce the death of Margrit Szumski who died in Bedford Hospital after a brief illness on 26th November.
Margrit will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Steven and Stewart, her daughters-in-law, Jean and Patricia, and six surviving grandchildren, Stewart, Douglas, Thomas, Michael, William and Alex. She has three great-grandchildren: Matilda, Ralph and Max.
Margrit was born in Hanover in Germany in 1928 growing up during wartime and its difficult aftermath. She came to live in Britain in 1949, marrying Mietek who had been a soldier with the Polish forces stationed in Germany during the postwar occupation. She worked in the Marconi factory in St Albans for several years before having children. Once her sons were older, she worked at Cottonmill Lane swimming pool before training as a shorthand secretary.
The family moved to Australia in 1967 and returned to St Albans in 1970. Margrit then worked as a secretary for the British Railways Board in London. Her marriage to Mietek ended in 1975, and she subsequently enjoyed time with her partner, Ron, until his death in 2017.
Margrit retired in 1986 and spent many enjoyable years playing bowls and holidaying in sunny locations. She is still fondly remembered by friends from Batchwood Bowls Club.
Unfortunately, her last years were afflicted by poor health and grief, struggling with the agony of osteo-arthritis and suffering the deaths of her younger sister and brother, Gisela and Joachim, Ron, and her beloved granddaughter Lauren.
We would like to welcome anyone who wishes to commemorate Margrit’s life to attend the service and reception on Tuesday, 7th January.
