We have lost Dad at the astounding age of 98 1/2, almost two years to the day Mum passed away (March 2nd 2024). Dad was born in Woolwich, Kent and spent his married life with Mum in Dartford Kent, where myself and my brother David were born.
His main career was as a Draughtsman for Ford Motor Company across the River Thames in Dagenham. Of course there are many memories, but what always comes to mind is laying in bed before getting up for school, hearing dad listening to BBC Radio news as he shaved in the kitchen and the smell of bacon and eggs wafting up the stairs. I don’t remember him missing a day of work though I’m sure he must have, but I think he instilled that work ethic in my brother David and myself.
Our first mode of transport was Dads 1951 Vincent Comet with a scratch built sidecar attached. If we’d ever been in an accident that would surely have changed history. Dad was an active member of the Vincent Owners Club and only stopped riding at 90 years old and driving at 95.
We enjoyed caravan summer holidays in Dorset and eventually trips to Europe, Mum and Dad got it done, not sure how.
Dad was a fairly stoic man but had a sly sense of humour and he would make Mum giggle before she would admonish him for dropping food down the front of his shirt.
I know Dad missed Mum greatly after she left but hopefully their spirits are reunited now. Dad, thanks for keeping David and I on the straight and narrow, I hope we did you proud, as proud as we were of you and Mum.
We love you and will miss you. Thank you for everything.
