Geoffrey was born in West Yorkshire and whilst serving with the army in Hong Kong he applied for the Methodist Ministry.
The Methodist Church decided to train a new generation of Chinese speaking missionaries, and in 1958 Geoffrey and Amy were appointed to work with the Chinese Church in Sarawak were he was appointed teacher at the Theological School in Sibu, as well as minister of the Wesley Church.
In 1962 the Church asked Geoffrey to go to Indonesia as a Principal of the Methodist Bible School in Medan and teach both Chinese and non-Chinese students.
This was a difficult time for Britishers because of Indonesia’s confrontation war, and Geoffrey was separated from his family for extended periods due to mandatory evacuations.
In 1965 Geoffrey was appointed General Secretary of the Malaysian Christian Council in Singapore, but a year later he returned to Medan to complete his work there.
Returning to Britain in 1967, he served as minister in Leith, Scotland, until in 1974 when he was invited to serve the church in Hong Kong as chaplain and teacher in two Methodist colleges.
While in Hong Kong the door into China began to reopen and in September 1980 he became the first Methodist minister to make contact with the Chinese ministry in 30 years.
He returned from Hong Kong in 1981 and the rest of his ministry was served in the Plymouth & Cirencester circuits.
He summed up his missionary calling in three words:
“Trust and Obey”
