Born to Albert Ely Auckland & Winifred Mary Jackson in Carlin How, Yorkshire, in 1938, Joy will be remembered for her smart brain, devilishly competitive spirit and a cracking sense of humor.
She started bookkeeping & was particularly proud of managing payroll at the age of 14 in the Ironstone mining town of Carlin How, caring for her father & 2 brothers having lost her mother. She was discovered at a local school pantomime, we think the Butterfly Queen, and was whisked off shortly after to join the Bluebell Girls in Paris. She married David Barrington Jack Castle, and created her family home in Kensington, London. Her second marriage to the Brutalist sculptor William George Mitchell is where her creativity, business flare and competitive spirit come to the forefront. As his business partner & fierce ambassador of his work, she oversaw the listing of 17 of his concrete works, curated numerous exhibitions and produced Self Portrait, The Eyes Within, Mitchell's autobiography. Always driven to achieve, it was her pride & joy to have received a master's degree in History of Art in her 60s. Having moved to Wallingford with Suzie, Stephen & family friend Estelle in 2020 she joined the local bridge club, built warm friendships she cherished, and would regale others with tales of wins & defeats around the kitchen table. A consummate home maker & trained Cordon Bleu cook, she decorated the home in magnificent floral arrangements and loved to produce proper meals for the family, her specialty a full roast with red cabbage followed by crumble and cream. She enjoyed embroidery, reproducing the cubist style of Paul Klee. Nothing however gave her more joy than being surrounded by her four grandchildren Harry, Alexandra, Max and Gen, and her great grandchildren. In recent years she enjoyed living in Marlow with Suzie & Stephen, had them hooting with laughter after her Let's Get Moving meetings and still played bridge each week. Holidays in Morzine with Barry were a cherished highlight as were his daily calls over the last 10 years.
Joy passed away peacefully on October 31st aged 86 with Suzie, Max & Stephen by her side.
We will be celebrating her life on November 19th 2024. All flowers are welcome & please do ask your florist to deliver to the Funeral director at 9.00am on November 19th. F.G. Pymm & Son, 65/67 Moorbridge Road, Maidenhead, SL6 8LT.
