1812 – George S Munn & Co. is Dignity's oldest funeral directors and has been providing funeral services for their local community on the south side of Glasgow since 1812.
1848 – J Rymer Funeral Service, was originally founded very close to York Minster, the branch moved to its current premises in 1967 and today is managed by the sixth generation of the Rymer family.
1876 – Beckenham Cemetery, a Dignity owned cemetery is the resting place of cricketing legend W G Grace.
1880 – Dignity Funeral Director J.H. Kenyon opened it’s first funeral home in Edgware Road, London, and is known for conducting funerals for the Royal family, politicians and other prominent figures.
1930 – Following World War One more people became interested in cremation and the fifth crematorium in London was built in Streatham in 1930. There were originally three chapels but only St George’s remains in use today. The mausoleum was the first to be built in Britain in over 150 years.
1965 – Sir Winston Churchill was the first statesman of the 20th Century to be given a state funeral, which was conducted by J.H. Kenyon, a Dignity Funeral Director.
1985 – Dignity launched the first funeral plan in the UK.
1986 – Independent Trust Fund, The National Funeral Trust, was established.
2001 – Dignity Caring Funeral Services was created.
2008 – Dignity acquired its first branches in Northern Ireland. Three of these are in Belfast with one each in Bangor, Newtonabbey and Carrickfergus.
2017 - Dignity Funeral Plans becomes the first ever organisation in the UK to be accredited the BSI Kitemark™ for Customer Service. BSI produce technical standards for various services and products across many industries, and their famous Kitemark™ is a widely recognised symbol of quality and trust across the world. This demonstrates that Dignity has always strived to provide only the very best standards of customer care, treating every customer with compassion and integrity.
Today – Dignity is a British company that is listed on the London Stock Exchange. We maintain the rich heritage of each of these funeral businesses, employing local people who understand the customs and traditions of their community.
