Benjamin John Emmett, a respected entomologist and dedicated beekeeper, passed away peacefully on the 1st February 2026.
Ben devoted over 40 years to agricultural science as an Advisory Entomologist with ADAS (Agricultural Development and Advisory Service), where he specialised in pollination ecology, the impacts of pesticides on beneficial insects, and the conservation of pollinators, particularly bumble bees. His expertise was widely recognised; in 2002, he delivered an insightful talk titled "The Plight of the Bumble Bee" to the Cambridgeshire Beekeepers Association, reflecting his lifelong concern for the challenges facing pollinating insects.
A passionate beekeeper, Ben maintained hives and shared his deep knowledge of bees with colleagues, family, and local communities. His work contributed significantly to understanding and supporting the vital role of insects in agriculture and ecosystems across the UK.
He is fondly remembered by his family as a loving husband and father who instilled a sense of wonder in the natural world through shared adventures.
Ben will be greatly missed by his family, friends, former colleagues in entomology and beekeeping circles, and all who knew his quiet enthusiasm, generosity, and commitment to the small creatures that sustain our world.
Rest in peace, Ben—your legacy hums on in every bee and blooming field.
