ANDERSON, Norman Richard

Passed away on 9 December 2025.

Norman was a much-loved husband, father, father-in-law, brother, mentor and friend. Growing up in Byker and living with macular degeneration from an early age, he never allowed his adversity to limit him. Instead, it powered him forward and shaped a life defined by determination, resilience and strength.

A friend and coach to many North East sportsmen and women, Norman’s influence reached from grassroots sport to the highest levels, including Olympians and England international rugby players. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to sport, Norman was also one of the first recipients of the Wilkinson Sword Award.

A dedicated physiotherapist, lecturer at Northumbria University and coach, Norman travelled the world sharing his knowledge, skills and passion, while also excelling as an athlete himself. He completed the very first Great North Run, competed and won as a powerlifter well into his seventies, and proudly carried the Olympic Torch for the London 2012 Games alongside his son, David.

Norman is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Oriel; his sons John and David (husband to Leigh-Anne); his brother Alf (husband to Anne); and was predeceased by his sister Mavis (wife to Jack).

This will be a celebration of a man who loved to laugh and lived life to the fullest. So, in keeping with Norman’s spirit, the family invite attendees to wear colours that would make him smile.

As Norman loved sharing stories and memories, the family warmly encourage everyone to leave their favourite memories, messages or stories, so they can see even more of the lasting impact he had on so many lives.

Service to be held at the West Road Crematorium on Thursday 8th January at 2.15pm.

Family flowers only, donations in Norman's memory to RNIB.
