Mrs Audrey Sagar of Farfield Crescent, Wibsey, sadly passed away at Sunningdale Specialist Care Home on Thursday 10th October 2024, aged 85.
Audrey Sagar was born to Elizabeth and Alexander Thomson on 25th July 1939. She grew up living in Bradford, first Bolton Road, until 1950 when she was 11, and then Redcar Road with her then sister Rachel, and her five brothers Donald, James, twins Alec and Stuart and Alan. Sadly, her sister Jeanette had passed away before Audrey was born, but she eventually gained another younger sister Anne, and another brother, the baby of the family, David. So, it was a very busy, if not a noisy household!
Audrey hated school, and although Audrey was in no way academic, she was a gifted swimmer and natural athlete, enjoying games and P.E the only lessons she actually liked. Hating school, Audrey was eager to leave and in 1955 she started to work in the local mill called Garnet’s as a textile worker with her brother Alan and sister-in-law June. However, mum thrived and loved the comradery of the other women she worked with. It was the loud noise of the mill, that Audrey said caused her loss of hearing later in life.
In 1955, Audrey met a dashing handsome feller called John Stuart Sagar from Ravenscliffe when she was just sixteen. After their engagement, a lovely wedding followed on the 23rd July 1960. Ian Paul came on the 29th June 1961, followed by Debra Patricia on the 30th April 1963. By now, Audrey had left work and became a stay-at-home mum, which she did for many years.
The early years of married life must have been hard as John worked away a lot, leaving Audrey to cope with two lively, young children, (one was far more lively than the other!) However, Audrey looked forward to those times when John would arrive home covered in muck and in much need of a good feed.
Audrey loved reading, and often had her head in a book. In fact, many a fire has been started in the Sagar household, as Audrey would put the chip pan on and start reading! She also loved playing cards and dominoes down at the local pub and enjoyed a game of bingo at the local Church, often dragging Debra along with her.
Audrey never had a career as such but had a variety of jobs over the years ranging from Lunchtime Supervisor at the local school, a Home Help and her particular favourite, and most recent in the 1990s, was working at St Luke’s Hospital as an Auxiliary. She loved being part of a team and said the girls there, ‘were a right laugh!’
Audrey was happily married to John for sixty years until his death on December 3rd 2020 which hit her hard. The trauma of losing her beloved John was the catalyst for her dementia to be sure.
However sad we are, we know Audrey has left a part of herself in our hearts forever. She leaves two children Ian and Debra, four grandchildren Ben, Easher, Natalie and Rebecca and THIRTEEN great grandchildren.
Ben and Magda – Nela
Easher and Michael – Charley, Skye, Ava and Elsie
Natalie and Daz – Ella-Rose and Billie-Jade
Becky and Kyle – Heidi-Mae, Harper-Rose, Frankie-Lee, Mia- Grace, Hadley-Amanda and Reggie- Ray
She is survived by her siblings James, Anne and David.
Also, Steve, John’s brother and sister-in-law Cath.
Audrey was gentle, kind and never said a bad word about anyone. She loved to have fun and everyone loved her. She spoke her mind, sometimes at inappropriate times, which often was followed by a mischievous twinkle and brought a smile to people’s faces.
She will be sadly missed.
