It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Jean on 11th November 2023, aged 88 years. She will be dearly missed by her husband, Frank, and all her loving family and friends.
Jean was born to George and Phyllis Clifton on 26th December 1934 in Enfield, Middlesex, home of the Royal Enfield Rifle & Motorcycle Company. She survived the Second World War and London Blitz. Jean was tenacious and bold in her approach to life. She attended Enfield County School where, at the age of 15, she met her husband, Francis John Boswell (Frank), who attended the adjacent Enfield Grammar School. There was already a sparkle and connection, that involved their love of music, dance and tennis. This soon led to their marriage in August 1956, lasting over 67 Years.
Jean and Frank lived a life of adventure; leaving the UK for foreign lands soon after they were married. They lived in Kuwait, Iraq, Greece, and Germany where they continued their active lifestyle. Jean loved being at the beach or on the water boating in their Power Cruiser Frank built himself while in Kuwait. Later she took up sailing from dinghy racing, where she won many trophies, to cruising in their own 32 foot sailing yacht “Kalivia” around the Greek Islands, their “Vessel of Joy” for over 20 years. In the winter you would find Jean enjoying a family ski holiday somewhere in Europe or later in the USA. Her favorite resort was the Austrian village of Berwang. It was there that she enjoyed the grandchildren (and her own children) learning to ski under her loving care and watchful eye. This was typically followed by Jägertee and Après-ski. Jean and Frank finally retired in 1994 to the village of Bredfield, in Suffolk England, where they spent many happy years, following their life passions for sailing, tennis, gardening and social events with friends and family. They enjoyed being part of village life and being an active part of the community. Jean served in the village shop for over 20 years while Frank was part of the village community committee.
Jean was a devoted wife, loving mother, caring grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She loved family gatherings and holidays, always creating delicious meals and telling stories about her travels. She loved to play the piano especially when accompanied by Frank on the clarinet, and an ensemble of musical family members on various instruments and vocals.
Jean was known for her warmth and compassion for anyone struggling with life challenges. She was the spirit of love. In this world when darkness seemed to overwhelm, she would find a bright side, turning fear into hope. She had a spirited sense of humor and a sharp wit. She loved to entertain in her home and enjoyed playing games that kept people guessing such as “The Stick Points.”
Jean is survived by her beloved husband Frank, her four children, Graham, Claire, Andrew and Louisa, ten grandchildren; Abigail, Ellie, James, Alex, Yiannis, Katerina, April, Maddy, Henry and Lottie. She had one great grandchild Zoe.
