As a man of faith, Derek was passionate about supporting the work of Christian organisations that demonstrated the love of God particularly in needy areas of the world. In recent years he actively supported a project that his brother-in-law, Jim Smith, helped to spearhead, along with Mary Ratter, through Echoes International in the Congo involving the building and maintaining of a secondary school.
