It is with deep sadness to announce that Derek sadly passed away on Friday 19th June, aged 88 years.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Derek was born to Sam and Violet Scott on the 12th September 1937. His younger brother William (Bill) joined the family a few years later. Derek grew up in the family home, which was based in Totton, Southampton.
After leaving school, he joined the Merchant Navy and served as a steward on ocean liners for a couple of years. Following this, he completed two years national service with the army. During his army service he learned to drive lorries. A skill that he would use professionally for the rest of his life.
After national service, Derek went on to have a couple of different driving jobs. He met Iris, his wife-to-be, while driving for the Corona soft drinks company.
He eventually transitioned to driving for the Hants & Dorset bus company. He enjoyed the combination of driving and public interaction, so this became a life-long career.
For hobbies, Derek loved reading, mostly crime novels. He also enjoyed owning and tinkering with classic cars and mopeds. For music, he liked country and 1950s rock & roll.
Derek retired in 2004. He bought a house located on farm land in north Cambridgeshire. This provided a peaceful environment to enjoy his hobbies. Various cats kept him company over the years, namely: "Pesky", "Mr Ouch" and "Poppy".
Derek lost his brother Bill on the 6th October 2020. His brother's family remained important friends both before and after Bill's passing.
Derek is survived by his three children; Sandra, Geoffrey and Tony. His grandchildren are Sandra's three daughters Joanne, Julie and Claire. Each with their own children.
Derek is remembered as a kind, gentle and honest man.
