It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of John Huckstep who passed away peacefully on Wednesday 23rd October 2024.
John Huckstep was born on 28 March 1929 in the Shanghai International Settlement. In 1943, John’s family was sent to a Japanese concentration camp for Allied Civilians: Lungwha Civilian Assembly Centre. In spite of the considerable hardships, the prisoners ran a school for the interned children and John was able to obtain his School Certificate. You can hear John reflecting on his time at Lungwha in a short BBC radio documentary ‘Witness History’ here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3ct3c2c
After graduating from Cambridge University, John spent a 35 year career with Shell, wholeheartedly embracing the adventures of overseas postings to India. He met his wife Jill on leave to England in 1959 and they soon married and had three children: Sarah, Clare and Tim.
John and Jill moved to Finchley in 1963 and St Mary’s Church soon became an important part of their lives. In his later years, John would make a huge contribution to the charity sector with his work for Finchley Charities and Charity Appointments. A talented linguist and keen hockey player, John was famous for his optimism and positive outlook on life. He will be remembered fondly by all that knew him including his seven grandchildren.
We hope you can join us in celebrating John's life at St Mary's at Finchley Church. Please RSVP to Sarah Huckstep: sarahhuckstep@hotmail.co.uk
