In Loving Memory of Mark Douglas Halsall
It is with immense sadness, but also with enormous love, gratitude and rememberence for the life he lived, that we announce the passing of our dearly loved
Mark Douglas Halsall — Son to Edna his mother and Frank his father now reunited in soul, father, grandfather, husband, brother, friend, free spirit and a truly unforgettable character.
Mark was a man who lived through many chapters, each one leaving its own stories, music, laughter and memories behind.
From childhood, he possessed a deep affection for nature and birdwatching. He found something special in the outdoors — in wildlife, open landscapes and simply taking the time to notice the world around him. That curiosity and appreciation for nature would remain part of him throughout his life.
As Mark grew older, his individuality really began to shine.
He lived through different eras without ever losing himself within them. He was a Teddy Boy, then a punk, and later embraced the freedom and spirit of the biker life. Music, fashion and motorcycles were never simply passing interests for Mark; they became chapters of his identity and a reflection of his wonderfully independent character.
During his punk years, Mark shared that chapter of his life with his then-wife, Christine. Together they experienced the music, culture and energy of the era, and from their relationship came perhaps the most important role Mark would ever have — becoming a father to their daughter, Sarah.
Mark and Sarah were quite simply two peas in a pod.
Their similarities were undeniable — their humour, curiosity, independence, imagination, love of music and their ability to become fascinated by everything from the ordinary to the unusual. Father and daughter could laugh together, debate together, explore together and recognise so much of themselves in one another.
As life so often does, paths changed and Mark and Christine eventually separated. Mark spent some time living in Manchester, before returning to Preston and making his home on Bank Parade, leading down towards the beautiful and historic Avenham Park, close to the River Ribble.
That period created some of Sarah's most treasured childhood memories.
Opposite Mark's home was an old, unused and overgrown garden which father and daughter affectionately called “the Secret Garden.” Untouched for decades and filled with nature, it became somewhere for childhood exploration and imagination — the sort of place where an ordinary afternoon could become an adventure.
There were days exploring the park together, discovering nature, laughing and rolling down the grassy hills of Avenham Park, followed sometimes by a visit to Nan's house for one of those delicious Sunday meals that become woven forever into family memory.
His lifelong careers brought much pride, He owned Spitfire motorcycles shop with a friend in his younger years, later worked as British aerospace then began his 35 year career at Electropac where he specialised as a metal engineer and dedicated part of the company.
Eventually, Mark found the place that truly became his home.
He bought his house in Longridge, next door to the very place where his family and friends will now gather to celebrate his life.
That house he fondly called his castle.
It was his sanctuary and treasured home for the remainder of his years. Looking out towards the beautiful Lancashire fells, he found a place and a community that became very dear to his heart. Longridge became home, not simply because of the house he owned there, but because of the life and memories he built around it.
When Sarah was eighteen, she moved in with her dad, beginning another close and wonderful chapter.
Those years brought countless moments of fun, laughter and the sort of everyday memories that become priceless with time. Mark introduced Sarah to music spanning generations and eras, passing on songs, artists and stories from the different musical worlds he had experienced throughout his own life.
Their home was filled with music, conversation, laughter and those wonderfully ordinary father-and-daughter moments that neither could have known at the time would one day mean so much.
Mark then gained another role that brought great happiness into his life — Grandad.
when Sarah began the next chapter of her life meeting her partner Gavin and creating a family of her own.
His grandchildren, Angel and Serenity, together with Aaliyah, Leo and Leah, became dearly loved parts of his world.
There were summers spent playing in the garden, family days out, visits, laughter and Christmases filled with excitement and cheer. These are the memories his family will carry forward: children in the garden, Christmas gatherings, conversations, jokes and the familiar comfort of simply knowing Grandad was there.
And amongst Mark's great loves was one that stayed beside him almost like an old friend — his beloved BSA Blue Star classic motorcycle.
His BSA represented so much of Mark: independence, craftsmanship, nostalgia, adventure and freedom. His love for motorcycles endured through the decades, becoming another unmistakable part of the man everyone knew.
Later in Mark's life came an unexpected and beautiful love story.
Across thousands of miles, across the pond in Tennessee, Mark met a woman who would come to mean an enormous amount to him.
What began across a distance grew into something profound.
They fell deeply in love — two souls with the same spirit, discovering a connection strong enough to flourish regardless of the miles separating them.
There were romantic adventures, shared experiences, laughter, companionship and a bond that endured for fifteen years.
For a man who could often be comfortable in his own solitude, this love brought a remarkable amount of joy, romance and companionship into his life.
Distance could measure the miles between them, but it could never adequately measure what they meant to one another.
And perhaps that is one of the loveliest ways to remember Mark.
His life was never just one thing.
He was the little boy watching birds.
The Teddy Boy.
The punk.
The biker.
The man on his beloved BSA.
The father exploring a Secret Garden with his daughter.
The dad sharing music late into the years.
The man who found his castle overlooking the Lancashire countryside.
The Grandad watching children play in his garden.
And the romantic who discovered that love could cross an ocean.
Mark lived a life full of different eras, different places, different adventures and extraordinary memories, while remaining unmistakably himself throughout them all.
He will be remembered for his smile, his humour, his curiosity, his individuality, his music, his stories, his love of nature, his motorcycles and above all the love he shared with the people closest to him.
For Sarah, there will forever be something of her dad reflected back at her.
Two peas in a pod then, and always.
Although we now have to say goodbye, Mark leaves behind something death cannot take — the countless stories, characteristics, lessons, laughter and memories carried within the people who loved him.
We invite Mark's family, friends and everyone whose life crossed paths with his to join us for his Celebration of Life on Monday 17th August at 1:30pm at Preston Crematorium.
Afterwards, we will gather beside Mark's beloved Longridge home at The HillTop Brasserie at The Dog Inn, where we will have the venue for the remainder of the day.
There will be food, drinks, music, entertainment, memories, stories and laughter as we give Mark a send-off worthy of the life he lived.
Because while there will inevitably be tears, this day is also about remembering the adventures, the music, the motorcycles, the friendships, the family, the laughter — and celebrating the wonderful fact that Mark Douglas Halsall was here.
Forever loved.
Forever remembered.
Forever part of us.
