It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Leslie Day. He passed away on 30th April 2026 at the age of 87.
John Leslie Day was a singular individual: a husband, father, companion, and friend whose life was lived with curiosity, passion, wit, and style.
He was a libertine in the truest sense, devoted to life's pleasures, beauty, conversation, laughter, food, music, art, literature, and companionship, but never recklessly so. He understood that a life well lived was not measured by restraint alone, but by engagement; by the willingness to embrace the richness of the world and the people within it.
A man of letters, of the arts, of feeling, and above all, humanity, John possessed an intelligence that seemed less learned than innate. He knew more than he could ever be taught, and yet remained endlessly curious. He approached the world with an appetite for knowledge, culture, and experience that never diminished.
He could be, in the most endearing way determined in his own convictions, yet endlessly generous with his time, attention, affection and friendship. Those who loved him did so completely. There were, on occasion, indulgent rolls of the eyes at his stories, his opinions, or his certainties_but always accompanied by laughter, tenderness, and profound affection.
John moved through life with an unassuming grace. He sought neither admiration nor recognition, yet inspired both. He leaves behind not only memories, but a way of seeing the world: with curiosity, warmth, humour, and an appreciation for beauty in all its forms.
He is deeply loved and will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St Luke's Hospice would be appreciated see the link below.
We will be congregating upstairs at the Bulls Head pub, by John's beloved river to share stories and celebrate a life well lived.
