From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
I have been looked after excellently by Zoe and the team at the Patcham office. They were sympathetic to our needs and made us feel safe in their hands.
Keith the chief Pall bearer was also incredibly helpful.
Kind regards
Mr A Rahaman
Thank you for the kind comments posted on your online review. I am glad that we were able to provide you with the dignity and respect needed at this time and that we were able to help ease any worries that you may have had.
I can only praise Zoe at Derriman & Haynes, arranging a funeral is not the best occasion there is but she was so kind and thoughtful. She went out of her way to help and make suggestions and although the funeral was for my mother who was 102yrs she never made us feel as if “well she was getting on” she gave my mother great dignity and respect, also the humanist she suggested Ruth was fantastic. I can only recommend Zoe 120% she made my loss a lovely experience. Lesley
