From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

We were so bereaved to lose our 93 year old father but Paul Bysouth Funeral Services made everything so helpful over such a sad time.
We lost our mother 25 years ago and the comfort then provided was sufficient for us to ensure we had the same professional people to see our dad was given a beautiful send off.
Thank you for an exceptional review. I am glad that we were able to provide you with the dignity and respect needed at this time and that you confided in us as a team to take care of your loved one.
Paul Bysouth & Son offered a sensitive and thoroughly efficient service throughout this difficult period. I had had no experience with regard to dealing with a funeral and the staff guided me the whole way with tact and care. On the day of the funeral I was, understandably distressed. However, the representative of the Funeral Services that was present was gently always available and was careful to ensure that the family were fully informed in terms of how things were run. We felt comforted and supported. The administrative staff were also very thorough and went out of their way to arrange all that the family wished, in particular, with reference to the music we wished. I would recommend this company without hesitation.
