Crematorium information

Sherwood Forest Crematorium was completed at the end of 2005 and was dedicated in January 2006 by the Bishop of Southwell. This was the first crematorium in the UK built with equipment designed to protect against heavy metal pollution which is a key factor in the destruction of marine habitats.

Sherwood Forest Crematorium is a modern, state-of-the-art building set in the Town of Ollerton in the Newark and Sherwood District, Nottinghamshire, England. It is on the edge of Sherwood Forest in the area known as the Dukeries, on Newark Road B6461.

Our light and airy chapel has seating for 103 people with comfortable sofa seating for the immediate family on the front row. Our service times are on the hour and last 45 minutes, which allows families time to gather and leave without the pressure of other funerals waiting for access. Longer services and private memorial services can also be arranged upon request. We are equipped with visual screens in the chapel and another in the entrance foyer for webcasts and tributes. This pairs with a speaker system and hearing loop system throughout both chapel and foyer, and under the porte-cochere. We are a multi-faith chapel and can cater for any service.

Our reception area is a comfortable setting for waiting, and has a drinks facility for hot and cold beverages, and toilet/ baby changing facilities.

The crematorium is set in ten acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, boasting seasonal bedding displays, flower meadows and two large ponds. We offer lots of different memorial options including scattering, rose gardens, water/ pond markers, benches, plaques and private garden memorials. Please speak to our grounds staff at any point and they can help you with any details for memorials.

The crematorium is open for open days, carol services, coffee mornings, please see our social media page for updates.

Our highly trained staff are always available to advise bereaved families about our facilities and memorials and are on hand to discuss any individual queries or requests. We work closely with funeral directors to ensure that the wishes of families are met in the most dignified manner.

Our fees

We know that understanding what goes into the cost of a funeral can sometimes be difficult for families. We also recognise that understanding the overall financial implications of arranging a funeral is important. To this end we have included a downloadable price list of the services available to you.

It is important to us that any confusion is completely removed to help families to fully understand what the Cremation Fee includes, and what this means as part of the wider cost of the funeral. We have outlined the elements that are necessary to provide a cremation service to you below, although of course we would be happy to discuss any further queries you might have directly with you. You can contact us at any time to talk through any further options and any fees that might apply.

The cremation fee includes the following:

  • All professional services relating to the administration and registration of the cremation, in line with statutory regulation.
  • The use of our Chapel along with the assistance of a trained staff member on the day of the service.
  • The provision of music during the funeral service (please contact the Crematorium for details of our available options).
  • The sensitive handling of the cremation in line with environmental legislation.
  • The appropriate national environmental levy for mercury abatement.
  • The scattering or interment of the ashes within our Gardens of Remembrance, or the preparation for their removal along with a suitable container and the Cremation Certificate.
  • Alternatively, we will look after the ashes safely and securely at our Crematoria site and can share with you the various options and next steps available to care for your loved ones ashes.

We also offer weekend services, fees for which along with  other available services are detailed in the PDF attachment entitled Cremation Price List

  • This option enables families to attend the crematorium to see the coffin in the chapel and be able to spend a few moments with the coffin before the leaving the chapel.
  • The crematorium staff will be available to help and assist you during the time at the crematorium, showing you both in and out of the chapel at the appropriate times.
  • Music may also be played should you wish.
