South London Crematorium & Cemetery

South London has served families in Lambeth and Wandsworth since 1936. Services are held in St George's Chapel, and St David's Chapel houses the Books of Remembrance. The grounds carry a good deal of the area's history, including Commonwealth War Graves, a War Memorial and a number of notable burials.

St George's Chapel seats 150, so a large funeral fits comfortably. Parking holds 30 on site with more in the adjoining cemetery when a service is busy. Families come here from Streatham, Mitcham and Tooting.

What to expect at a cremation

Attending a ceremony

Each service here has a set length, and it varies from one crematorium to another. Your funeral director will tell you how long you have, let you know when to arrive and where to gather, and keep an eye on the timings on the day so that you don't have to.

The service can include readings, music and time for reflection, led by a minister, celebrant or family member. At the moment of farewell, called the committal, the coffin is lowered or hidden behind a curtain. Some families prefer to leave it in view.

When the service ends, there's usually time to gather outside and speak with other guests. Your funeral director will be there if you have any questions or concerns.

What to wear

Most people wear black or dark clothing but this isn't a rule. Some families ask guests to wear a particular colour or something that meant a lot to the person who has died, like a favourite team's shirt. They may also just want people to wear whatever they're comfortable in. If you've been invited and you're not sure, ask the family.

After the ceremony

The ashes are ready to collect from the crematorium a few days after the cremation. We can also hand-deliver them or scatter them in our memorial grounds for you, whichever you prefer. Some families choose to keep the ashes at home or scatter them somewhere with personal meaning.

A memorial is a lasting place in the world for someone special. Our crematoria offer a range of options, from plaques and benches to planting a tree in the gardens. Memorials can also be arranged after a direct cremation, even if there was no ceremony held at the crematorium itself.

What families say about us

We have supported many families whose service was held at South London Crematorium. The staff were calm, respectful, and everything ran smoothly — a real help at such a sensitive time.

Afterwards, some families chose to scatter the ashes at sea, particularly for Hindu rites where clean waters are preferred. South London Crematorium provided a peaceful and dignified starting point for that final journey.

As a Funeral Director, I work closely with many crematoria, and I can honestly say that the team at South London Crematorium are consistently professional and supportive.

I would like to mention Ana, who is truly a credit to the crematorium. She is always kind, patient, and incredibly helpful to not only us as funeral directors, but most importantly to the families.

We held my father ceremony at the crematorium a couple of weeks ago.

Anna was so kind and patient with us, she showed us around the chapel twice, going through every details with us, always with a smile.

We could see that she cares about her job. On the day, she remembered everything we talked about and took the pressure off us.

When we changed the date to Sunday, Anna and the team were very accommodating too.

We honestly couldn't have chosen a better crematorium. The surroundings is beautifully maintained and the large car park is a bonus.
