From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Thank you so much to Laura and the wonderful staff at Michael Smy’s for their compassionate and kind support in arranging all that needed to happen for my dear Mumma’s cremation. I so appreciated your kindness.
We would like to express our thanks to Kate and the team for helping us so professionally, with care and empathy following our mum’s death. Kate was very helpful from the moment we made contact, recommended a lovely Celebrant, Tina, and contacted us the day before the funeral service to make sure everything was in place. You made a very difficult time so much more bearable. Highly recommend to others.
Impeccably dressed and presented at the funeral. Very professional and dignified throughout.
Our arrangements changed over time and were not the most straightforward. Kate dealt with it all effortlessly and with grace. She was very helpful suggesting how the timings, music etc, would pan out.
The event ran smoothly and faultlessly.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Micheal Smy; they were recommended to us initially. Having met with three Funeral Directors, Smy’s got the balance right. They weren’t “pushy” and responded to our calls professionally.

We were recommended Michael Smy when my father passed away. They were amazing when they came to collect my father they gave us the time we needed. We went to the funeral home to make all the arrangements and were helpful, patient and dealt with our family with empathy. They made sure the day before that we were aware of how the funeral be. Everyone dealt with us and my dad with dignity. We would like to say thank you for making the worst time bearable.

I am pleased that the arrangements for your father were carried out to your satisfaction. Our quality of care is something we are proud of and we know what a difference it makes to the families in their time of need.
Michael Smy were a nightmare to deal with from day 1. They showed zero empathy throughout and were only interested in money. They made one of the hardest times for myself and my family even harder. I would not recommend them to anyone. Even now, 3 weeks after the funeral I am still chasing them for my dads ashes and receiving no reply.
