Green fingered gardeners demonstrate their skills
Every summer the gardeners at Dignity’s crematoria pit their horticultural skills against each other and according to general manager, Steve Gant, it’s getting more difficult to choose a winner for the Dignity Gardening Award.
“Every single one of our crematoria grounds looked stunning throughout summer,” said Steve. “The horticultural skills and dedication of our gardeners is first class and through Dignity Express I would like to thank them all for making it so difficult to choose a winner for each category.”
This year the nominations in each region for crematoria developed pre the year 2000 were:
- North – Lancaster & Morecambe
- Midlands & East Anglia – St Faith’s, Norwich
- London & South East – Randall’s Park, Leatherhead
- South West – Exeter & Devon
The nominations in each region for crematoria developed since the year 2000 were:
- North – Wear Valley
- Midlands & East Anglia – Fenland
- London & South East – Three Counties
- South West – Mendip
When making his judgement Steve is looking for an exceptional level of gardening maintenance combined with grounds that provide a high-level of service to visitors and demonstrate a clear focus on what our clients want. After much deliberation Steve chose Lancaster & Morecambe and Wear Valley as the overall winners.
“Lancaster & Morecambe has won this award for the last few years and have also won awards from external organisations during this period,” said Steve. “However, the gardeners at this crematorium are now facing a genuine challenge for the Dignity Gardening Award from staff at other crematoria.”
Crematorium manager, Helen Goodwin and her gardening team recently attended the North West England In Bloom Awards and came home with the gold medal from the Royal Horticultural Society for the third successive year. The team have also collected the Lancaster and Morecambe In Bloom Award for the third successive year.

Public visit Bentley Crematorium and Cemetery
Bentley Crematorium in Brentwood opened its doors to the public on Saturday 22 August, giving local people the chance to have guided tours of the crematorium and its grounds. Michelle Hales, the manager of Bentley Crematorium, said: “Our cemetery has recently opened for burials and we felt that this was a great opportunity to let the public see the fantastic facilities we have here at Bentley.”
