From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Very pleased with standard of care and consideration. They managed to dispel all the nervous anxiety surrounding the process of visiting a funeral directors for the first time.I was given a warm and homely meeting with tea and biscuits by Victoria who guided me through the process with a professional but sensitive ease.
Our whole team are here to give you the utmost compassion and support to each and every client and I am glad they did this for you.
The death of a parent is always a difficult time. However, Mews Funeral Directors were able to ease me through the procedure, always respectful and not averse to my requests to tweak the funeral plan slightly by adding a beautifully decorated cardboard coffin.
Come the day, everything was done so professionally and again, respectfully and I felt Mum would have been really pleased with how it all worked out.
I won't say I'm looking forward to using their services for my own funeral plan, but I am at least reassured that it will be done well.
Thanks to all at Mews.

We are grateful of receiving your online review, It has been a privilege to look after your Father.
The Funeral Directors were extremely professional in their approach to all aspects of the organisation, conduct and planning of the events. At a time that is fairly traumatic for a family they explained everything carefully, listened and reacted to any enquiry or change requested of them. I cannot recommend them highly enough, no fuss, no dramas, just calm reassurance.
It is comforting to know that the team were there to support you through this time and relieve some of the pressure through guidance and support.
Excellent service throughout, efficient and compassionate. I couldnt fault them. They made everything so easy and straightforward at an emotional and sad time.
We are grateful of receiving your online review. I am pleased that you had the trust and confidence in our team to be able to deliver the service you expected.
