From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Wow, what a nasty shock. I have used Phillips in the past for my Nan and my mum and their approach from start to finish was exemplary and full of careful navigation and above all empathy. For that reason, I have always recommended their services.
Sadly, my experience trying to organise another close relative's funeral with them was nothing short of shocking.
The conversation started that I would like to discuss a funeral and the man was quite flippant and offhand in his response, 'what funeral?'. I said I was looking into funerals and costs and was about to inform him of who had passed when he said the costs would be something to discuss once the funeral arrangements are underway. He then without drawing breath asked me questions about limousines, attended, burial, cremation, flowers and I said he had only died on Sunday and was just trying to get an idea of costs and it was too soon to know all that information.
At no point did he even say I am sorry for your loss, although this phrase is over used perhaps, it is still welcome as a mark of respect. I told him how shocked I was at his approach that he hadn't even acknowledged the death and he basically said that was my fault because I wasn't clear in my question. How many people are clear in their questions when they are only three days into their loss?
Needless to say, Phillips, your services are absolutely NOT required and I certainly would not recommend you. Shocking service.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We are sorry that you were unhappy with the service that you received and would be grateful if you could contact our Client Relations Department, to discuss your concerns further on 0800 783 7171 between the hours of 8.45 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.
Very attentive, understanding, Judy was very approachable and helped us plan the funeral for our mother, mother in law, Nanna, Great Nanna. Helped with the flowers, the order of service , from start to finish Philips took care of all things, suggested places for the wake. We have always used phillips for any funerals in the area. We trust them with our family member and know we will get what we requested .
Totally professional and friendly
I am pleased to hear that you found our staff to be professional and friendly. Thank you for taking the time to send your online review to us.
Phillips Funeral Directors dealt with my wife's funeral. I can't praise Judith, the Funeral Arranger, enough. She put my daughter and myself at ease, explained everything carefully and in detail. We felt no pressure whatsoever and the Funeral, a cremation, was extremely well conducted and fully accorded with our wishes.
A very difficult situation was made easy. Thank you very much.
Thank you for highlighting a member of our team, we know how important it is to look after each family member and try to show this in each aspect of our work. Thank you for your 5* review.
Phillips Funeral Directors were faultless at organising my mum’s funeral. We would particularly like to thank Judy who arranged everything for us at such a sad time and to John Graham who was the celebrant. I would have no hesitation in recommending Phillips.
I am glad that you chose Phillips Funeral Directors to look after your Mum. It is always good to hear that individual members of our team have provided a service to you to the best of their ability.
