Welcome to Hemley Funeral Services in Bushey. We have a long history of caring for families during their time of need, and we are proud to be part of Watford's heritage after many years of helping the community we love.
Our story began in 1850, when a local man named John Field needed an apprentice for his building firm. He went to a local school and chose a young man called Harold Hemley. They worked as partners for many years, until John passed away, which was when Harold took over the business and called it 'Field & Hemley'.
Harold's two sons, Harold and John, were enlisted in the army. On their return home, they helped their father at work, and then together they decided they wanted to dedicate their services to funeral undertaking. They crafted beautiful coffins in their workshop, and used cars and carriages from Hempsalls, Waford.
In 1970, they decided they needed their own funeral home, which they built themselves at 35 Harcourt Road, Bushey. They served the community they loved for many decades, until they decided to retire at an old age. Families always described John as a cheerful and helpful man who always wanted to help in any way that he could.
The values of our founders and the Hemley family remain at the heart of all we do, serving families from Bushey, Bushey Heath, Oxhey, The Rookery and the rest of Watford.
We are here to make a difficult time a little easier for you, so please call us at any time and we will be here to help, no matter what.

From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Thank you to Kay and Greg for your kindness , compassion and expertise to ensure our uncle’s funeral was exactly as we wished for him. Your professional guidance and communication made the task of organising the funeral seamless. I would recommend the team at Hemley’s without any hesitation. Our celebrant Bernadette was excellent, she conducted the service with empathy and feeling. Thank you.
Your staff were extremely kind and professional when dealing with them. Could not fault their personal and professional service.
I am pleased to hear that you found our staff to be professional and respectful. Thank you for taking the time to complete the online review.
Efficient and helpful
I am happy that we provided a professional service to you. I am happy that we provided a professional service to you.
For those of you that have not ventured down this avenue before (like myself), you will be pleased to know that there is someone out there that can help and guide you right through Funeral process. In our case, we had a very relaxed, personal and informative experience throughout. Kay, the first person we spoke to in the Funeral Director's Parlour had years of experience and had such a manner that she calmed the grieving process down enough so that the arrangements could be made. From Kay, to the dropping off at the venue for the Wake by in the Limo went just like clockwork.
Thank you so much Hemley, I literally wouldn't have been able to do it without you.
We really appreciate you taking the time out to share your experience online with us. It helps other families in their time of need. Our quality of care is something we are proud of and we know what a difference it makes to the families in their time of need. It is always good to hear that individual members of our team have provided a service to you to the best of their ability. The team will be very pleased to hear that their care and support made a difference to your family.
