Paying for a funeral plan

You can pay for a funeral plan in one go or spread the cost over up to five years, with no extra charge. This guide explains both options, what fixing the price of the essentials means, and how your money is looked after until it is needed.

Two ways to pay

Whichever plan you choose, there are two ways to pay for it.

What fixing the price means

Paying now fixes the price of the essentials in your plan, which protects you against future price rises. Funeral costs have risen steadily over the years, and this is the one of the reasons many people take a plan out.

It is worth being clear about what that covers. The essentials set out in your plan are guaranteed. Anything outside the plan – a burial plot, a memorial, a wake – is paid for at the time and at the price that applies then, though you can include a contribution to these costs if you wish. Please note that while we guarantee the value of the contribution, we cannot guarantee the service it is for.

Where your money is held

The funds supporting your funeral plan are held in an independent trust established under UK law and separate from the provider's own assets, providing important protection for customers.

The selling and administering of funeral plans is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

If your circumstances change

Life changes, and plans can usually be adjusted. Your plan terms and conditions set out your cancellation rights, including the cooling-off period after you buy, and what happens if you need to pause or stop instalments.

If anything changes, talk to us early rather than simply stopping a payment. We will explain your options.

How to buy a plan

You can set a plan up online, over the phone with one of our funeral plan specialists, or in person at your local Dignity branch.

There is no rush. Take the time you need to look at the options and think about what is right for you, and ask us anything that is not clear before you commit.
