From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
A highly professional, considerate and informed service. Staff were attentive from the outset, and they couldn’t do enough for our family. The funeral was managed beautifully, and we were impressed with the follow-up care.

Nothing was too much trouble for Michael at Ely. I wanted to visit my mum on bank holiday Monday, not a problem. Michael took all our wishes on board and made them happen. He was extremely professional including his team on the extremely hot day we buried my mum. Thank you for making the hardest day of my life manageable.
Our team are here to provide the highest level of service for you and we are happy this was achieved. It makes a difficult time seem a little easier and I am glad that you confided in us as a team to take care of your loved one.
Our funeral director was absolutely brilliant when organising my uncles funeral. Nothing was too much trouble and he made sure the day ran smoothly by taking time to run through routes etc beforehand with me - all little extra touches which we really appreciated. Ely Funeral Directors also looked after my Dad when he passed away, I wouldn’t use anyone else.
We appreciate you leaving a review online for Ely Funeral Service. Your feedback is always valuable to us and I am so pleased that the team looked after you and the family so well.
Julie, the funeral arranger, provided much support when I needed to make decisions regarding my late mum’s funeral. At such a sad and difficult time, she was kind, understanding and professional and gave me reassurance that my dear mum was being treated with dignity.
