From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
Sue, Yvonne and Sarah's advice and hard work led to a lovely farewell service for my father-in-law. It was a perfect send off and he would have thoroughly approved.
Thanks again, especially to Sue, for guiding us through a very emotional time.
We take pride in giving outstanding service to our families. I am happy that we were able to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of a difficult situation and make things easier for you and that our staff went above and beyond to deliver the service you expected.
The Ian Clarke staff were most helpful and supportive throughout what was a very difficult period for the whole family. Their caring, thoughtful approach throughout the process of arranging the funeral for our late Mother made things at lot easier than they might otherwise have been.
On the day, the Funeral arrangements went off without a hitch and we received comments from a number of family members and friends that they thought that the ceremony was a fitting send off for our Dear Mother.
Many thanks to the Ian Clarke staff from all of us.
