From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

We just wanted to thank you for your support with Mum’s funeral arrangements, which went seamlessly, and to express our appreciation to the team which conducted events on the day. They were a pleasure to deal with, were extremely respectful and ensured everything went very smoothly.
Thank you for entrusting us with the care of your Mum. It is good to know that we managed to make the day run as smoothly as possible for you and that we were able to look after you and your family at this difficult time.
My family and me were very well supported during such a difficult time, arranging the funeral of my husband. We were treated with care and respect at all tines, and received face to face appointments with Hazel, deciding which coffin, order of service brochure, we had a photo when doing the reflection, it was all done very professionally with care and support. They also did the same for my mum and dad who passed away within 5 months of each other 4 years ago.
I am glad that you and the family were well cared for. Thank you for this recommendation.
