From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
Found all staff very caring , helpful and dignified. My mams funeral went just as the family wanted.
I am glad that you chose Charles Embleton to look after your Mother and pleased that our staff went above and beyond to deliver the service you expected.
On behalf of myself and my family I would like to thank the staff at Charles Embleton FDs for arranging both my step-dad's and uncle's funeral. Unfortunately we lost both these family members within months of each other and we cannot thank staff enough for their help and support during this difficult period. All staff were extremely sympathetic and Margaret did an exceptional job of organising both funerals. From start to finish she was there to sort out the finer details and regularly contacted us to keep us up to date with funeral plans. I would also like to thank Ann who was our Celebrant, who along with discussions with our family wrote and delivered beautiful eulogies. Both these ladies helped make such unhappy days a lot more bearable through their sympathetic and caring nature. Again, thank you to all the staff at Charles Embleton FDs which I will highly recommend to anyone.

The staff members both at "Sudero", Blue House Lane, Washington and at the Shiney Row sister branch were always helpful, kindly and sympathetic, carefully leading us through the options available and advising appropriately. They are very skilled in gently leading you through the necessary formalities at an emotional time and injecting a much-needed element of humour at just the right moment if it is fitting. A most professional and caring team service. Many thanks.
