From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
My mom passed away in September
I cant say enough about how amazing dyson Richards shirley branch were, marie and dee went through the process step by step offering support to all my family nothing was to much and at a very difficult time for us as a family they were there every step of the way nothing was too much trouble for the girls treated my mom with respect and dignity even in death.

Could not of asked for a better funeral directors to support and conduct our dad’s funeral. All the staff were so professional and friendly and made such a tough time so much easier. Marie and Dee are absolute super stars and we cannot thank them enough for everything they supported us with. The funeral was absolutely beautiful and such a perfect send off exactly what our dad would have wanted. We wouldn’t have had it any other way, Marie was brilliant throughout, available when we needed her, gave us so many ideas, explained how the funeral will go so we knew what to expect and listened to our requests. On the day she was so professional and caring and we know that our dad would have absolutely loved it. Thank you all for everything you did for us we cannot sing your praises enough. Highly recommend ❤️
From the first meeting right to the funeral itself, we received regular updates and support. Marie, who organised us all on the day was just brilliant. I recommend Dyson Richard’s strongly.
Thank you to all the staff at Dyson Richards , Shirley (and the drivers) Special thanks to Marie the funeral director. She went above and beyond in dealing with complex funeral arrangements. She couldn’t have been more kind, caring and compassionate to the family at a very difficult time. We are forever grateful to you all.
My mom wasn't looked after by Dysons but marie the funeral director from there was doing my mom's funeral on that day as mom was looked after at barnes Hill site. She was so kind caring sweet and looked after me and my sister so well as we walked in front of the Hurst as we wanted to walk mom on her final journey. Marie took our hands and made us feel so looked after from start to finish. Can't thank her enough for that. She has such a big kind heart ❤️
