From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
Although my husbands funeral was beautifully carried out i feel very let down. We took out funeral plans years ago and were told this would cover the cost of cremation, the hearse and one car. This had worked perfectly for my mother. When I got in touch with A Hazel and sons they confirmed this, and I just had to pay extra for the flowers. The funeral went perfectly, the flowers were beautiful and I had of course already paid for them. Since the funeral I have received requests for more and more money to pay extra Crematorium costs, like a fool I paid these, then when I told friends they were amazed and said I shouldn't have paid without a full explanation of these costs when we hasn't had anything extra to what was written in the plan or I suppose you could call it a contract. I feel they used my grief to pay the extra money and wonder if they have done this same thing with other people. I also wonder if they will put my post in the comments. I feel so let down, when I should be feeling at peace knowing I did my best for my husband, instead I am in turmoil and so very upset.

We recently used A Hazel's of Streetly for my MIL & found the service outstanding. Leading up to the ceremony we had regular contact at every stage, even receiving a call from Nigel on the evening before the ceremony to run through the details and confirm the information he had was correct. The day went off beautifully & although very sad, it was the perfect send off for a wonderful lady. Massive thanks also to Damien Carter, our celebrant, for the wonderful service & to Emma & Rebecca who went through the process with us from start to finish.
You are all amazing
We used A. Hazel for the funeral of my wife's Mom as she had a prepaid funeral plan. The whole process was smooth and dealt with a professional and sympathetic manner, from sitting down with the lady at the Chester Road office, up until the funeral itself and everything else in between. On the day, the cars arrived promptly and in spotless condition and the mourners were courteous and helpful. Stella Munro, the celebrant, deserves a mention as she conducted the service in a thoughtful and caring manner. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend A. Hazel and sons to anyone looking for a top quality funeral directors.
Thank you for making an extremely heartbreaking loss a little easier to deal with. Rebecca was a genuine helping hand through this time. Making everything run smoothly and taking the worry out of funeral. Thank you
