S. Wellens & Sons – 150th Anniversary

We are proud to be celebrating 150 years of service to the community of Middleton and surrounding areas.

Founded in 1870

S. Wellens & Sons has grown from a small funeral directors in Black High Street to the well-established funeral home it is today.

For the past 150 years they have provided beautiful and personal funerals and continue to do so for families in the local community..

Our founder

S Wellens & Sons Funeral Directors was founded by Abraham Wellens; who was a silk weaver and draper by trade. In 1870, he started offering professional funeral services to the families of Manchester. Abraham had three sons who eventually joined the business; David, who was a hatter, Joseph, who was a joiner, and Samuel, a tailor.

Our first funeral home

Our first ever S Wellens & Sons funeral home was on Back High Street in Middleton. In 1881, Samuel took over the business from Abraham; which saw us move to 121 Long Street in Middleton, which is where we are still based today.

Our growth

Billy, Samuel’s son, and a former Mayor of Middleton, was an integral part of the growth of S Wellens & Sons. Billy was responsible for designing, building and opening our funeral home on Long Street, Middleton; laying the foundation stone himself. He was a pioneer for the introduction of motorised vehicles to the Middleton area; we now boast a fleet of seven Mercedes and two private ambulances.

Over the years

In the early 1960s, we acquired J Dyson to create S Wellens & Sons Inc. J Dyson Funeral Directors in Chadderton. In 1996 we brought our New Moston Funeral Directors; before acquiring our Blackley Funeral Directors in 2017. S Wellens & Sons Funeral Directors have arranged and conducted funerals for many notable police officers and military figures, including that of Fusilier Lee Rigby.

Memorabilia

We are proud of our long history and rich heritage at S Wellens & Sons Funeral Directors. In our memorabilia room, you can find a collection of historical pieces that we have gathered over the years.
