Starting life as a joinery business in the village of West Buckland, Thomas Brothers Funeral Directors was involved in the manufacture and supply of coffins to the local funeral homes. During the 1960s, Mr Cyril John Thomas took the decision to expand operations into the funeral business itself and opened the first Thomas Brothers funeral home on Wellington's High Street, where it remains to this day.
Cyril Thomas hired a couple of retired joiners to help with pallbearing duties and, with a full contingent of staff in place, the new business started to grow. Working alongside his daughter, Angela, Mr Thomas was soon able to buy out Bonds, a local competitor, which put his funeral directors on the map and on the road to the next stage of the Thomas Brothers story.
The time eventually came for Cyril Thomas to retire and place the funeral business in a new set of hands. He had worked hard to instil the core values that still guide the business today, those of compassion, professionalism and care, and found his successor in an ex-policeman named Ron Nurcombe.
With his wife, Jill, Mr Nurcombe bought the business and their nephew, Paul Fudge, was installed as the Funeral Director. Continuing the founder's mission to provide comfort and understanding at a time of need, the new owners decided to expand Thomas Brothers Funeral Directors further.
The eve of a new millennium saw the opening of a second funeral home in Taunton. The new premises gave the business a base in Somerset's county town, providing Wellington's nearest neighbour with its own Thomas Brothers Funeral Directors. Thirteen years on from the expansion into Taunton, the business became part of the Dignity family, with 2012 also marking a complete refurbishment of both funeral homes.
