W Williams & Son Funeral Directors

The history of our Cheshire funeral directors

Our history

In the 1870s, William Williams, also known as Bill, was the carpenter who made the coffins for the only funeral undertakers in the village of Little Sutton. When he decided he wanted to set up his own undertaking business, his employer advised him to do so on the other side of the village, as it was small and there was little demand for such a service.

William had a son named Arthur, who ran the business for many years after his father. However, Arthur had two daughters, during a time when it was unusual for women to run a business. They had no interest in taking over, so when Arthur sadly passed away, a man called John Parry came to be in charge, who was originally their trusted hearse driver.

After the war, W Williams & Son Funeral Directors continued to grow, employing local, friendly faces and investing in more funeral homes in Whitby and Little Sutton to help better serve the families of Cheshire.
