Direct cremation funeral plans

A direct cremation funeral plan pays for a simple, unattended cremation in advance. There's no service, no mourners, and no ceremony. It's the most affordable way to plan a funeral. It also removes admin and decision-making from loved ones at a difficult time. Dignity's direct cremation funeral plan costs £1,899, with options to upgrade and add extras if you wish.

What is a direct cremation funeral plan?

A direct cremation funeral plan is a pre-paid arrangement for a cremation without a funeral service. The plan covers the essentials only. This keeps costs low and paperwork simple.

Here's how it works. You choose a plan and pay for it in advance, either in full or by instalments. When the time comes, the funeral provider collects the person who has died and arranges transport in a specialist vehicle. The cremation takes place without mourners present. There's no fixed date, time, or location chosen by the family; the provider selects this. Ashes are returned afterwards in a simple container.

Dignity's plan includes:

  • Cremation only
  • Unattended funeral, without a service or ceremony
  • Date, time and location of funeral chosen by us
  • Transport of the deceased in a specialist vehicle
  • A wood effect coffin
  • Ashes returned in a simple container

Why choose direct cremation?

Cost is the biggest driver. Direct cremation is significantly cheaper than a traditional funeral with a service. There's also far less to organise. Families don't need to book a venue, arrange cars, or set a date around mourners' availability. Many people also simply prefer a low-key, fuss-free send-off. Others plan a separate celebration of life later, on their own terms.

What's included, and what's not

Direct cremation is deliberately stripped back. Knowing what's missing helps you decide if it's right for you.

What's typically included:

  • Collection and transport of the deceased
  • A simple coffin
  • The cremation itself
  • Return of ashes

What's typically not included:

  • A funeral service or ceremony
  • Attendance by mourners
  • Choice of cremation date, time, or venue
  • A hearse-led procession or transportation for mourners
  • Viewing of the deceased beforehand

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

  • Lower cost than an attended funeral
  • Less to plan and organise
  • Reduces financial pressure on loved ones
  • Prices can be fixed at today's rate, protecting against inflation

Disadvantages:

  • No formal opportunity for mourners to gather
  • Families don't choose the date or time
  • Some may feel it lacks ceremony or ritual
  • A separate memorial event, if wanted, needs organising separately

You can still personalise a direct cremation

A direct cremation doesn't have to be entirely without personal touches. Many providers, including Dignity, let you upgrade or add extras. You could choose a different ashes container or urn instead of the standard one. You could add a memorial item, such as a plaque or keepsake. Some families also arrange their own small gathering once the ashes are returned. This gives you the flexibility to keep costs low while still honouring your loved one in a way that feels personal.

Use the savings for a celebration of life

Direct cremation typically costs far less than a traditional funeral. Many families choose to put those savings toward a celebration of life instead. This could be a gathering at home, a favourite venue, or somewhere meaningful to your loved one. It happens on your timeline, not dictated by cremation logistics. This approach separates the practical task of cremation from the emotional process of remembering someone. Some people may find it a more personal way to say goodbye.

How you pay for a plan

Direct cremation funeral plans can usually be paid for in two ways. You can pay in one single upfront payment. Or you can spread the cost through a monthly instalment plan. Instalment plans make the cost more manageable, though some providers add interest or fees for spreading payments. It's worth checking the total cost of an instalment plan against paying upfront.

Cancelling a plan

Most funeral plans come with a cooling-off period, typically 30 days from purchase. You can cancel within this window and receive a full refund. Cancel after the cooling-off period, and providers may apply a cancellation fee. This fee varies between providers, so check the terms before you buy.

Making changes to your plan

Life circumstances change, and most plans allow for this. If you move home, for example, you can usually update your plan to reflect your new location. Always check with your provider what can be amended and whether any charges apply.

Not all direct cremation plans are equal

Prices and terms vary between providers. Some charge more for instalment plans. Others add fees for an oversized coffin, the removal of a medical device such as a pacemaker, or collection from a private home rather than a hospital or care home. It pays to read the small print carefully. A plan that looks cheap upfront can cost more once extras are added. Comparing what's included, and what triggers an additional charge, helps you choose the right plan for your circumstances.
