From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Excellent only one thing it would have been nice to have been offered a cup of tea or coffee.

The service throughout the whole process was impeccable, dealt both with professionalism and sensitivity.
Elaine and the team were always on hand to deal with any questions and at no time did I feel uninformed.
I would not hesitate in recommending their services.
It means a great deal when people take the time to share their experience and to highlight individuals in the team who have made a difference.
David Silvey provided a caring, personal and professional service when we entrusted them to arrange our mother's funeral. All of the staff that I had dealings with were sensitive and helpful. They helped make a difficult time less stressful by also taking on many of the external arrangements for us. We trusted that they would help to ensure that everything went smoothly on the day of the funeral, and it did. They helped us to give our dear mum a memorable send off that we will look back on for years to come.
Your kind words mean a great deal to the team who always work very hard to deliver great care. It has been an honour to look after you and your loved one and to respond sensitively to your specific needs. Thank you for entrusting us with the care of your Mother.
Of all the numerous problems and strange tasks that unfortunately come with a family death the one aspect that was made easier was the funeral itself. David Silvey and Son employees were commendable from the first phone call to the funeral which went without a hitch. The compassion, respect and professionalism of all involved was exemplary and I would strongly recommend this funeral director to anyone who is subject to this sad occasion.
We appreciate you sharing your experience with us. Your comments will help us to ensure we are providing the right level of care to our families. Our quality of care is something we are proud of and we know what a difference it makes to the families in their time of need. Our whole team are here to give you the utmost compassion and support to each and every client and I am glad they did this for you.
