From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

My experience, after my Father passed away, with Ginns and Gutteridge Funeral Directors was excellent. The organisational stage was very straightforward, Gemma was very helpful, she explained things clearly and was in regular contact throughout the planning. Francis, the funeral director took the time to visit our home before hand to check the location and on the day everything went perfectly. It seems wrong to use the word lovely for a funeral, but it really was! From when the hearse arrived Francis and his team were exemplary. So smartly dressed and respectful. Lots of small touches throughout, that showed so much care and dignity for my Dad. Tim the celebrant they recommended was exceptional. Having such a beautiful tribute really has helped our family through the grief.
The entire team at Gunn’s & Gutteridge are just incredible. They help and support you through a difficult time and are always at the end of the phone/email to ensure your plans are completed exactly as you want them. They are friendly and couldn’t be more helpful. Our family couldn’t have asked for a better place to support us through both our mum & dads funerals. Thank you all so much.
Thank you to all the staff at Ginns & Gutteridge especially Francis who ensure my late father's cremation went smoothly and with no fuss.
We were kept informed at all times and any questions were answered quickly.
I would recommend this service to others.
We started with a very nice conversation with francis, who helped us by passing us to our local branch where we met jack, he helped us sort out the whole procedure with a very calm and relaxed attitude , which helped us as not only were we emotional wrecked but also very anxious , i jumped in with questions that were in the middle of the procedure, he was flexible and happy to go at any order or speed we wanted, we laughed , i cried but jack was brilliant, he made it possible for us to see mum before the funeral and how good she looked, at peace and pain free at last, the funeral was stress free, francis took the funeral on without any problems, everything went as planned , tim ran the service wonderfully , all those that attended commented on how great it was
We would like to thank all those involved in making our day less painful
Francis and his team at Ginns and Gutteridge did a fantastic job with our Mother’s funeral at Bramcote Crematorium on the 7th of April.
Particularly Francis showed amazing warmth, professionalism and gave the whole event an air of polished precision.
Lovely job from all involved including Jack who did the family meeting and arrangements.
A heartfelt thank you to all.
Michael
