From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

We have received your online review. I am pleased that you were so well looked after by our team and that all of the arrangements were carried out to your satisfaction.
Both Alana and Jo were understanding knowledgeable and supportive which made a very difficult time easier. They also made suggestions when things were not as clear as they might have been at all times keeping in mind all of our previous wishes and feelings.
I can't thank them enough it made a difficult sad day a day we can look back on with good memories and the knowledge my Mother had the things that she wanted right to the last moment.
I can not recommend more highly the service my Mother arranged and recieved from GF Hunt and Dignity.
Thank you
Mrs Nicola Sandell
Thank you for the kind comments posted on your online review. I am pleased that the arrangements for your Mother were carried out to your satisfaction and that all of your wishes and requirements were carried out by the team as you had requested which helped to make things easier for you at such a difficult time.
When my wife Rosie died not long ago, my brilliant step-children sorted all of the funeral arrangements based on what we had told them was wanted. G F Hunt is local to my step-daughter so I think that was why they were chosen, but whatever the reason it didn't matter, these guys did an amazing job, from Clare in the office sitting and listen to me bang on various visits, to Trish on the day organising the many, many family members that were there and sorting Rosie's brothers to carry the coffin. All of the feedback I have had about you guys has been positive so in addition to my thanks on the day, have them again on here.
GF Hunts were so easy to deal with at such a sad time. We felt real compassion and understanding from the very begining. Clare she was brilliant and the showed care compassion and understanding. Nothing was ever to much trouble just amazing we couldn' t of wished for better. Michelle was also really good and very professional with a call the night before to reassure us all was in hand was very calming and kind. We are very grateful thank you to all involved.
Claire And Family.
