From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
We recently and suddenly lost my father, and chose Longhurst Epsom Funeral Directors to help us with the arrangements. From start to finish, they were caring, respectful, and utterly professional.
I want to give special thanks to Peter Harnett, who was an exceptional funeral director. He showed grace, compassion, and sensitivity throughout – treating my father, and our family, with the utmost respect and care.
Karen Gabriele, our celebrant, also deserves heartfelt thanks. She took great care in guiding us and delivered a beautiful, thoughtful service that I know my father would have been proud of.
To the whole team – from those supporting on the day to the administrative staff behind the scenes – thank you. Your professionalism and kindness meant the world to us during a very difficult time.
One hopes never to need a funeral director, but if you do, I cannot recommend Longhurst highly enough. They gave my father the most dignified and admirable farewell we could have hoped for.
From first contact and throughout everyone at Longhursts, Epsom have been caring and considerate but also efficient and professional. We received support and help if we needed it from the planning stage right through to the day of the funeral. Extra caring touches were much appreciated and helped to make the day personal and special. The whole team were excellent.
Exceptional and considerate service from the first point of contact and thereafter.
Well done from start to finish.
We really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback and being open with us about the service we provided. Our team are here to provide the highest level of service for you and we are happy this was achieved. I am pleased that all of the arrangements were carried out to your satisfaction. It has been an honour to look after you and your loved one and to respond sensitively to your specific needs
My initial reason for choosing Longhurst of Epsom was due to the fact that we first used them for my fathers funeral in August 2002 and because my mum was so pleased with them she told me that she would also like me to arrange her funeral with them when her time came. Needless to say my wife and I respected her wishes and were extremely pleased with all the arrangements and services provided from beginning to end. The professional attitude and the help given and shown by all the staff through every aspect of the very sad occasion including the drivers and bearers was excellent. We were particularly impressed with the manner in which we were kept informed about all the things we needed to do including the order of service they had printed and the music we requested in line with our wishes. Our overall experience is that we would highly recommend them to anyone.
I am glad that you chose Longhurst Funeral Directors to look after your mum and thank you for entrusting us with the care of another loved one. I am pleased to hear that you found our staff to be professional and respectful and that they were able to make a difficult time seem a little easier. It has been an honour to look after you and your loved one and to respond sensitively to your specific needs.
